Beaverhead Mountain Range, ID

Summary:

As part of our senior-level field camp, we began bedrock geological mapping of the southern end of the Beaverhead Mountain Range, Idaho in 2005.  We have now completed a stretch approximately 70 km in length of the western side of the range, from its southern tip, near Idaho Highway 22, northward to Eighteen Mile Peak.  This summer, we will begin working on the eastern side.

The mountain range consists primarily of Paleozoic carbonates that have been highly deformed by Sevier folding and thrusting, with a later overprint of east/west Basin and Range extension, as well as north/south extension due to passage over the Yellowstone Hotspot.  Prominent structures include thrust faults, high-angle reverse faults, normal faults, overturned folds, recumbent folds, isoclinal folds, and fault-propagation folds.

In addition to field camp exercises, the project, thus far, has led to several senior theses pertaining to stratigraphy, structure, and mapping compilations that have been presented at professional meetings.  Final maps of the western slopes are now being prepared for publication with the Idaho Geological Survey.
